Dust Collection System Designed for Breakfast Cereal Processing

Thanks to its expertise, NEU JKF offers you turnkey, reliable and efficient solutions for dust extraction and treatment.

Cereal and sugar are the main two ingredients of many breakfast cereal products and the corresponding material handling and packing processes often have potential dust emission points. Left alone, these dust emissions may present production, hygiene or operator issues and need to be addressed.

Delta NEU has its roots in dust extraction solutions, solving problems on a bespoke basis, whether on a new installation or a longer established installation.

A dust extraction system has three main aspects to it: the dust collection, the dust filtration and the collected dust handling. With a new installation, much of the work is undertaken as a study with the machinery supplier, however, the more common situation is with an established installation. Here the first, and often difficult, exercise is in determining precisely where the dust emissions are, and a detailed site study is undertaken.

When the emission points are identified suitable extraction hoods can be designed, but with a careful balance on the air volume selected: too little and the dust control is ineffective, too much and there is a risk of powder from the process also being extracted. However, this aspect of the design is a key part of the training of all Delta NEU engineers, using the excellent Group CEFAN facility.

With known hood and air volumes the ducting network can be designed, and a suitable dust Jetline filter selected from the Delta NEU range of continuous operation filters with reverse jet cleaning. However, many established production facilities present a challenge in where to locate the filter due to space and building limitations, and the filter selection is often quite a challenge. The nature of the dust means there could be a risk of a dust explosion in the event of a dust cloud and ignition source, and all the Jetline filter range are available with suitable explosion protection compliant with the ATEX regulations.

Once the dust has been collected, it needs to be handled for either disposal, often in plastic liners to present no secondary risk to the operator or reclaimed back into the process. Whether this is by a simple feed to an adjoining part of the process or, by a materials handling system to a storage facility, NEU has the expertise.
