Waste Recycling in the Biscuits & Bakery Industry

Many baked products are manufactured on a continuous production line. During the production start-up and subsequent operation there are inevitable occasions when the finished product may be sub-standard or need to be ejected from the line. The first of these is during the start-up process when the production settings are critically fine-tuned, and the product may be slightly over-baked or under-baked until the optimum set points are reached. Once running, the production line through the oven and cooling sections is a continuous process and any interruption in the subsequent packing state means the product already on the line must continue, it cannot stop in the oven of course, meaning it will be rejected from the line.

Whilst it may be possible to recycle good finished product, that which is out of specification becomes waste. However, it is a product suitable for reprocessing and used in animal feed manufacture and may be taken from the site to another facility for this reason.

The handling of the waste as it is ejected from the production line may be labour intensive and present hygiene issues.

As a solution, Delta NEU can install a waste extraction system which automatically extracts the waste product from any of the reject points and convey it to a centralised collection area for transportation offsite. Such a system will generally consist of a ducting network with bespoke designed collection hoods, to suit the production discharge points, linked to a Chopper fan, which both conveys the product and breaks it into small pieces and crumb for easier handling.

At the centralised collection point, which is generally located outside the factory building, the waste material is separated from the conveying air and discharged into skips, a waste compactor or a collection trailer for cost-effective offsite logistics. Inevitably the collection and conveying process releases dust from the product which is separated from the air using a dust filter from the Jetline range of continuous operation, reverse jet cleaning, filter and the collected dust will be re-entrained so it too is fully recycled. The filter itself is designed for any explosion risk a dust cloud of the product may create and it is fully ATEX compliant.

Although some product will always need to be considered as waste, good product rejected due to packing line interruption, for example, may be considered for reprocessing as an alternative and the NEU Process activities can offer solutions for this.
