Hand Stripped and Sheet Waste

In the conversion processes, there is often sheet waste to be disposed of and, commonly, hand-stripped waste from the die-cut sheets.

For the hand-stripped waste, a sweep-up point is included in the waste system where waste from the floor is simply swept into a suction hood and conveyed away to the collection area. Within the sweep-up point, there are no moving parts or other dangers and the use of the hood is quite safe, although with a formidable suction to ensure effective removal of the waste material. Such sweep-up points can be used to clear significant quantities of waste in a short period of time and are often used intermittently to save power or used in a shared configuration where the extraction is diverted to other points in the system.

One such point may be a sheet shredder, which is used to reduce the size of the sheets so the board pieces can be conveyed through a fan and ducting system to the collection area. Again, the throughput of the sheet and waste system usually means the period of use for the shredder is quite short and the extraction system may be in a shared configuration.

From either a sweep-up point or a shredder connection, the waste will pass through a Chopper fan which provides the suction and airflow through the system but will also break up clumps of waste to enable an easier passage through the ducting and limit any risk of blockages. The capacity of the Chopper fan in these applications is measured in tonnes per hour and so will inevitably exceed the manual feed rate ensuring only short periods of running are required.
