Beverage can manufacturing is part of a growing global market that is estimated to be worth $125billion in 2017. A typical beverage can manufacturing facility produces c.750million drinks cans per year.

Aluminium drinks cans are convenient, portable, lightweight, durable, quick to chill and unlikely to break. They provide a barrier to light and oxygen, protecting the flavour and freshness of the beverage inside.

Aluminium is 100% sustainable and can be recycled forever. Using recycled aluminium rather than virgin ore allows manufacturers to make up to 20 times the number of cans for the same amount of energy.

The manufacturing process starts with a coil of aluminium, which is used to form up to 3,000 cans per minute. Scrap metal offcuts are produced at two points in the production process and these require efficient extraction and collection for recycling. Oil mist from lubricant used as a metal coolant during the can manufacturing process also requires extraction and filtration.

With increased competition in the retail environment, beverage cans need to capture the attention of consumers on the shop shelves. Aluminium cans have a 360 degree surface area, which can be directly printed on with bold colours and intricate designs to communicate a strong visual identity.

The can decorating process produces waste ink mist from a series of eight print heads. This ink mist needs to be extracted from multiple points in the decorating process, before the air is filtered and cleaned.
